Position Summary:

The Surgical Medical Coder is responsible for coding and auditing surgical procedures to ensure accuracy, compliance, and optimal reimbursement. This role plays a key part in the integrity of clinical documentation and the efficiency of claims processing. It is a remote, full-time position offering a Monday–Friday schedule.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Apply accurate diagnostic and procedure codes to outpatient hospital accounts using official coding guidelines

  • Review clinical documentation to ensure proper code assignment

  • Monitor assigned work queues for timely charge/coding completion

  • Generate coding queries for physician clarification when needed

  • Stay updated on coding changes and regulatory updates

  • Manage workload efficiently under minimal supervision while meeting established deadlines


Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma/GED (or higher)

  • Active professional coding certification (e.g., CPC-A, RHIT, RHIA, CCA, CPC, COC, CPC-P, CCS) – must be maintained annually

  • 2+ years of experience using ICD-10 and CPT coding

  • 2+ years of surgical coding experience in Plastics and/or Otolaryngology

  • 2+ years of experience with PCs, Windows, MS Excel, and EMR systems


Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of post-certification medical coding experience

  • 1+ years of outpatient physician (Pro-Fee) coding experience

  • Familiarity with encoder systems (Encoder Pro, EPIC)


Work Schedule:

  • Full-time, 40 hours/week

  • Monday to Friday, 8-hour shifts

  • Schedule will be coordinated with the hiring manager
