In 2021 alone, our treatments reached 766 million patients globally. But we’re not stopping there. We need passionate, curious, and bold individuals to join us in advancing our science and improving patient outcomes worldwide. Join us and help reimagine medicine!

In the Global Discovery Chemistry (GDC) team at Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR), we are at the heart of our mission to design and develop new molecules for patients in need. We are looking for a highly motivated Senior Scientist with expertise in medicinal and synthetic chemistry to help us drive the future of drug discovery in a dynamic and collaborative environment.

About the Role:

As a Senior Scientist, you will co-lead multidisciplinary project teams, working in close collaboration with colleagues across Novartis sites (US, Switzerland) and external Contract Research Organizations (CROs) in India. You will help discover and develop novel therapies aimed at addressing high unmet medical needs. This role will provide you with the opportunity to influence projects from early-stage discovery through to clinical development, working with cutting-edge drug discovery approaches.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership & Collaboration: Co-lead project teams, focusing on medicinal and synthetic chemistry, in close collaboration with colleagues across global Novartis sites and external CROs in India.

  • CRO Management: Implement best practices for CRO management to ensure alignment of project priorities, productivity, and efficiency. Ensure smooth execution of chemistry tasks across the CRO and internal teams.

  • Integrated Project Strategy: Develop integrated team plans and flexible chemistry strategies to address key scientific questions and project needs in a highly dynamic and collaborative environment.

  • Data Integration & Reporting: Synthesize complex project data to develop scientific hypotheses and design molecules in collaboration with colleagues, reporting findings into Novartis databases in a timely manner.

  • External Relations: Act as an ambassador for NIBR to external groups, building new relationships and contributing to Novartis' standing in the scientific community.

What You Will Bring to the Role:

  • PhD in Chemistry (or related life science discipline) with profound knowledge in medicinal/synthetic organic chemistry and at least 7+ years of experience in drug discovery.

  • CRO Leadership Experience: Proven leadership skills and extensive experience managing CROs, with a track record of impacting multiple projects from hit generation through to development candidate selection.

  • Multi-parameter Optimization Expertise: Ability to integrate disease biology, ADME, and toxicology data to solve complex drug discovery challenges, applying multi-parameter optimization strategies.

  • Curiosity & Openness: A curious mindset, with an openness to diverse perspectives and an enthusiasm for developing yourself and others.

  • Strong Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal English communication, with strong influencing and presentation skills.

  • Interest in Disruptive Technologies: A passion for emerging trends in data science, automation, miniaturization, and their applications in drug discovery.

  • Health & Safety Commitment: A strong understanding of Novartis' health, safety, and environmental policies, with a commitment to adherence.
