Job Title: Scientist I/II, Microphysiological Systems (MPS)

Location: Watertown, MA
Department: Global Drug Discovery (GDD), Novo Nordisk

About the Department

Novo Nordisk's Greater Boston Research & Development hub is a dynamic center of life science innovation. With facilities in Lexington, Watertown, and Cambridge, our teams work across the full R&D continuum—from early research through late-stage clinical development. We focus on driving collaboration and innovation, leveraging the best of biotech agility and pharmaceutical stability to develop cutting-edge medicines that improve the lives of patients.

The Microphysiological Systems (MPS) department is being established in Watertown as part of our cardiometabolic disease research efforts. This department will focus on developing advanced human cell-based disease models that will support the validation and progression of early drug candidates for cardiometabolic diseases. The new department will integrate strongly with the Integrated Physiology Research area and the broader biology teams within Global Drug Discovery (GDD).

The Position

We are seeking a Scientist I/II to join our MPS department and drive the development of multicellular cardiometabolic disease models. The role will focus on advancing cardiometabolic disease research, particularly around obesity, Type 2 Diabetes, skeletal muscle biology, and neurobiology. As a Scientist, you will be part of an ambitious multidisciplinary team, helping to establish human disease-relevant models and technology platforms within drug discovery.

You will work closely with cross-functional teams to advance organ-specific disease model development and help establish a new research unit at Novo Nordisk. Additionally, you will lead in vitro technology development, mentoring junior scientists and collaborating with both internal and external partners to achieve project goals.

Key Responsibilities

Research and Technology Development

  • Drive the development of multicellular disease models relevant to cardiometabolic diseases such as obesity and Type 2 diabetes.
  • Develop advanced in vitro models with disease-relevant functional endpoints, focusing on skeletal muscle, brain, and insulin resistance.
  • Lead efforts in developing MPS platforms to support drug discovery within cardiometabolic disease.
  • Act as a subject matter expert in MPS technology and cell-based disease models.

Collaboration and Mentorship

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive model development, including scientists, project managers, and external partners.
  • Mentor and guide junior scientists in model development and experimental design.
  • Communicate findings effectively across global teams, providing leadership in the form of scientific presentations and publications.

External Partnerships and Strategy

  • Contribute to and lead external collaborations with both academic and commercial partners to advance MPS technology.
  • Effectively collaborate with teams across global R&D, leveraging resources and expertise to drive successful project outcomes.
  • Guide and shape complex cross-functional collaborations, ensuring alignment on project goals and strategies.

Qualifications

Required

  • Master’s degree with 8+ years of relevant experience or a Doctoral degree with 2+ years of post-doctoral and/or industry experience.
  • A Bachelor’s degree with 12+ years of relevant experience is acceptable.
  • Strong background in cell culture and developing advanced human in vitro model systems, particularly in multicellular models for obesity/cardiometabolic diseases.
  • Experience in developing disease-relevant functional endpoints for models of metabolic diseases.

Preferred

  • Drug discovery experience in a pharmaceutical setting is highly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in establishing and driving complex collaborations, both internal and with external partners.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a strong emphasis on presentation and leadership abilities.
