Job Purpose

The Scientific Specialist is responsible for developing high-quality scientific content through research, scientific writing, editing, and fact-checking. This includes creating content for all MedCom communication outputs while ensuring project objectives and deadlines are met. The role requires a comprehensive understanding of the organization’s services, relevant therapy areas, client products, and scientific guidelines. The specialist takes ownership of projects, resolves complex technical issues, and maintains effective communication with clients, external authors, and opinion leaders throughout the project lifecycle.


Key Accountabilities

Specialized Knowledge

  • Demonstrate understanding of department’s service offerings and ensure discussions with clients are informed, appropriate, and consistent with MedCom services.
  • Comply with departmental procedures related to project delivery and tracking, and promote these procedures within the team.
  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of client products, therapy areas, and industry guidelines (e.g., Good Publications Practice).
  • Identify technical or process issues relevant to project delivery and take action to resolve them.
  • Contribute to proposal and pitch development teams by applying specialist knowledge creatively and proactively.

Project Execution and Success

  • Write and edit high-quality scientific content.
  • Prioritize own work and manage project schedules to meet deadlines.
  • Ensure work aligns with project scope, objectives, and budget.
  • Monitor project progress and scope changes, flagging any deviations to the project lead.
  • Interpret scientific data accurately and ensure outputs are consistent with client objectives and messages.
  • Undertake necessary research on topics relevant to the project.
  • Foster strong relationships with opinion leaders/authors and external parties.
  • Proactively resolve project issues in collaboration with the team and clients.
  • Maintain familiarity with and adhere to departmental SOPs, ensuring quality control.

Client Management

  • Proactively assess project needs and develop solutions to meet client satisfaction and project profitability.
  • Identify and resolve complex technical and process issues with internal teams, clients, and external bodies.
  • Communicate project scope changes and manage client expectations effectively.
  • Strive for high levels of client satisfaction with all interactions and deliverables.
  • Identify opportunities for follow-on business and act to develop them.
  • Manage timelines, expectations, and deliverables to maintain client satisfaction.

Skills Required

  • Proficient in MS Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and internet skills.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

  • Ability to acquire and apply knowledge of specialized therapy areas.
  • Competent scientific writing, proofreading, and copyediting skills.

Knowledge and Experience

  • 5-8 years of prior experience in a similar role, preferably within a medical communications agency environment.
  • Experience in scientific writing, editing, and managing client relationships in the medical or pharmaceutical field.

Education

  • A degree and higher degree in Life Sciences, Pharmacy, or Medicine (e.g., BSc, BA, PharmD, PhD, MD).
