Summary

Location: Cambridge, MA #LI-Onsite

The Novartis Oncology Disease Area is seeking a highly motivated, creative, and collaborative scientist to join the Biological Chemistry (BC) group. This role offers a hands-on opportunity to discover innovative cancer treatments. As an early-stage drug discovery team, we focus on understanding and leveraging the molecular mechanisms of novel cancer targets for developing, characterizing, and optimizing small molecule therapeutics.

About the Role

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assay Development: Design, develop, and troubleshoot biochemical and biophysical assays using various detection technologies to identify and characterize cancer targets and small molecule modulators.
  • Binding Analysis: Measure binding affinity, kinetics, and understand the mode of binding of ligands to proteins of interest.
  • Technology Integration: Assess and implement emerging technologies and novel assay approaches to advance drug discovery programs.
  • Medicinal Chemistry: Contribute to medicinal chemistry efforts, including evaluating compound SAR (structure-activity relationship) and mode of action characterization.
  • Collaboration: Communicate, collaborate, and challenge assumptions to push scientific boundaries with a diverse team of cross-functional scientists.

Note: This position is based at the Novartis Cambridge (MA) site and does not offer remote work options. It also does not require travel.

Compensation

The expected pay range for this position is $66,000 to $99,000 per year. This range is effective from 1/1/24 to 12/31/24, with potential adjustments based on job market fluctuations. Final pay will depend on various factors including location, experience, skills, and other considerations. The total compensation package may include additional elements such as a sign-on bonus, restricted stock units, discretionary awards, and a comprehensive benefits package.

Essential Requirements

  • Educational Background: Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry, Biophysics, Enzymology, or a related field with 1+ years of relevant laboratory research experience through employment, internships, or co-op programs. Or a master’s degree with 0-1 years of relevant experience.
  • Technical Expertise: Solid understanding of protein function and enzyme mechanisms. Experience in biochemical and/or biophysical assay development for protein target and small molecule inhibitor characterization, as well as protein-ligand binding interactions.
  • Bench Skills: Strong technical ability at the bench, eagerness to learn, and willingness to tackle challenging scientific questions.
  • Team Collaboration: Experience working with multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Assay Techniques: Experience with fluorescence-based assay techniques (e.g., HTRF, FP, or quench assays) and label-free technologies (e.g., SPR, ITC, DSF, or mass spectrometry).
  • Data Analysis: Proven ability to analyze, interpret, and present data clearly and concisely.
  • Communication: Excellent team player with strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Desirable Requirements

  • Automation Experience: Hands-on experience with automation for medium to high throughput assays.
