About the Role:

Pfizer’s Anti-Infectives (AI) Research Unit is advancing innovative therapies that can significantly improve patient outcomes. This Research Fellow position presents a unique opportunity for a seasoned scientist to apply expertise in virology and antiviral therapeutics to discover new drugs aimed at the treatment, prevention, and cure of infectious diseases.

In this role, the incumbent will spearhead the development of a data-driven research strategy for virology and antiviral therapeutics, including target identification and validation, as well as biomarker discovery for drug development. A deep understanding of chronic biology research is essential.

The primary mission of this role is to lead a research team in driving scientific rigor, developing assays, performing data analyses, and generating preclinical data packages to support all stages of the drug discovery process. The successful candidate will also be instrumental in advancing cutting-edge virology methodologies and applying the most relevant platform modalities to generate actionable biological insights.

This role is integral to the Anti-Infectives Research Unit's drug discovery pipeline and will collaborate closely with Pfizer's internal teams and external partners to enhance research capabilities and contribute to scientific advancements in the field.

Role Responsibilities:

Research Leadership & Drug Discovery:

  • Lead and manage a team of scientists to advance drug discovery programs, including preclinical requirements for development-stage programs.
  • Stay abreast of the latest scientific and technical developments in chronic virus research, preclinical-to-clinical translation, and apply these insights to drive portfolio advancement.
  • Collaborate with multi-functional teams, providing antiviral expertise to enhance drug discovery projects within the Anti-Infectives Research Unit.
  • Promote innovative experimental approaches within the research unit to accelerate drug discovery.
  • Apply novel methodologies to identify new therapeutic targets, validate hypotheses, and gain a deeper understanding of disease mechanisms to guide antiviral strategies.
  • Actively seek opportunities to implement advanced research methods and tools to innovate drug discovery processes.

Collaboration & Communication:

  • Work closely with team members to analyze data and integrate research findings to provide new insights into disease biology and therapeutic approaches.
  • Present research findings and analysis to internal project teams, leadership, and external collaborators. Publish significant discoveries in high-quality scientific journals.
  • Participate in collaborations with academic and industry partners to transform antiviral strategies and enhance assay development capabilities.
  • Effectively communicate the value and impact of virology research to Pfizer's R&D teams and external audiences at scientific conferences.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in virologymolecular biologyantiviral therapeuticsdrug discovery, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 15 years post-PhD experience in academia or biopharma/biotech settings.
  • Expertise in chronic viral diseases and research methodology for antiviral drug discovery.
  • Experience in applying advanced virology techniques to address complex biomedical challenges.
  • Proficient in statistical analysis and data interpretation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong background in virologyantiviral drug discoverymolecular biologycell biology, and immunology, with practical knowledge of viral-host interactions and chronic/latent viral diseases.
  • Passion for solving biomedical problems and a proven track record of advancing scientific discovery.
  • Excellent publication record in reputable scientific journals.
  • Previous experience in a pharmaceutical or biotech environment.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience, with the ability to influence peers, mentor others, and oversee projects to drive meaningful outcomes.

Compensation:

  • Annual base salary: $173,300.00 - $288,800.00
  • Eligible for Pfizer's Global Performance Plan (bonus target of 22.5% of base salary) and participation in the long-term incentive program.
