Job Title: Translational Medicine Lead

Location: Boston, MA
Department: Translational Medicine, Research and Early Development, Novo Nordisk

About the Department

Novo Nordisk's Research & Development organization brings together some of the brightest minds in life science innovation. With teams in facilities in Lexington, Watertown, Cambridge, and Seattle, we cover the full R&D continuum, from early research through late-stage clinical development. Our mission is to transform the future of healthcare by creating a differentiated pipeline that meets the unmet medical needs of patients.

The Translational Medicine department within Global Translation, Research and Early Development focuses on developing and deploying pharmacodynamic biomarkers in Phase 1 trials. This allows for data-driven decision-making, enhancing the likelihood of successful drug development. We work closely with multi-disciplinary teams to ensure biomarkers are integrated from early research experiments through to early clinical studies. Our goal is to create medicines that make a difference for patients and improve human health.

The Position

We are looking for an innovative and dynamic Translational Medicine Lead to join our team in Boston. In this key leadership role, you will guide the biomarker sub-teams to ensure the successful integration of translational medicine biomarkers throughout early clinical trials. You will collaborate closely with internal teams and external research collaborators to help develop differentiated products that meet the unmet medical needs of patients.

Key Responsibilities

Biomarker Development and Deployment

  • Lead the development and implementation of target engagement and pharmacodynamic biomarkers in Phase 1 trials.
  • Implement prospective stop/go criteria to facilitate data-driven decision-making in clinical trials.
  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams to ensure the biomarkers are successfully integrated into clinical development strategies.

Scientific Leadership and Collaboration

  • Build scientific knowledge in the areas of biomarkers, precision medicine, and relevant therapeutic areas.
  • Obtain advice from external experts to enhance the strategic direction of biomarker development.
  • Participate in updates of processes and SOPs related to Translational Medicine.
  • Provide input to the clinical development strategy based on principles of Translational Medicine and Precision Medicine.

Communication and Reporting

  • Communicate biomarker findings and recommendations to internal teams, external partners, and stakeholders at all levels.
  • Present findings to internal teams, external collaborators, and at scientific conferences.
  • Contribute to scientific publications and presentations on biomarker research and clinical development.

Leadership and Mentoring

  • Lead and mentor the biomarker sub-teams, guiding their scientific contributions and professional growth.
  • Foster collaboration and innovation within cross-functional teams to drive project success.

Qualifications

Required

  • PhD in a relevant field with at least 8 years of experience (combination of industry and academic roles acceptable).
  • Strong background in Translational Medicine, bridging preclinical and clinical research.
  • Experience with biomarker development and pharmacodynamic biomarkers in clinical trials.
  • Expertise in metabolic and/or cardiovascular disease is advantageous.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to present complex scientific concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to lead teams, drive projects forward, and foster cross-functional collaboration.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience in the development and deployment of pharmacodynamic biomarkers during the drug development process.
  • Demonstrated ability to strategically guide clinical development using Translational and Precision Medicine principles.

Physical Requirements
