Role Summary: The Principal Scientist in the Biophysics & HTS group at Pfizer’s Oncology Research Unit in La Jolla is responsible for evaluating drug interactions and protein behavior using biophysical methods. This role requires a high degree of independence in providing biophysical insights to project teams and utilizing advanced techniques to characterize small molecule-protein interactions.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Biophysical Characterization:

    • Independently characterize small molecule-protein interactions using biophysical methods such as SPR, HTRF, ITC, thermal stability assays, MST, and native MS.
    • Regularly represent the biophysics team in multi-disciplinary project meetings, providing insights into protein-ligand kinetics and thermodynamics.
  2. Collaboration & Scientific Leadership:

    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate biophysical data into early-stage drug discovery.
    • Mentor colleagues and train them in biophysical methods.
    • Stay updated on emerging biophysical technologies and integrate them to enhance the group’s capabilities.
  3. Technical Expertise:

    • Apply knowledge in enzymology, drug mechanisms, and structural biology to support the discovery of new drug candidates.
    • Handle recombinant proteins and apply them in biochemical and biophysical assays.
  4. Research & Innovation:

    • Contribute to scientific research and drive innovation in biophysical characterization of drug interactions.
    • Publish research findings and share insights with the scientific community.

Basic Qualifications:

  • PhD in Biophysics, Biochemistry, Structural Biology, or related fields.
  • 3-5 years of experience in drug discovery in pharmaceutical or academic settings.
  • Expertise in biophysical methods such as SPR, HTRF, ITC, MST, Native MS, and thermal stability assays (e.g., DSF).
  • Experience in high-throughput screening and plate-based pharmacology.
  • Strong background in enzymology, drug action mechanisms, and structural biology.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and a team player with a strong publication record.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with small-molecule screening using biophysical methods.
  • Experience in targeting difficult-to-drug targets, protein degradation, and antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs).

Physical/Mental Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and transport large stacks of plates, plate stackers, and 5L bottles of liquids.
  • Occasional use of step stools and tools for equipment repair.
  • Ability to work in a lab environment with safety equipment (lab coat, eye protection, gloves).
  • Standing and walking for most of the workday.

Work Location & Travel:

  • Location: On-premise in La Jolla.
  • Travel: No significant travel required.

Compensation & Benefits:

  • Salary Range: $99,900 to $166,500 annually, with a 15% bonus target.
  • Benefits: Comprehensive benefits package, including 401(k) plan, health insurance (medical, dental, vision), paid time off, caregiver leave, and more.
  • Relocation Assistance: Available based on business needs and eligibility.

EEO & Employment Eligibility:

  • Pfizer is an equal opportunity employer and adheres to all applicable laws regarding employment and work authorization.

This position offers the opportunity to lead cutting-edge research in drug discovery, with a focus on biophysical characterization and small molecule-protein interactions, while collaborating with experts across multiple disciplines.
