Role Summary:

The Pfizer Oncology Research Unit in La Jolla is seeking a Principal Scientist to join the Biophysics & HTS group within Discovery Technologies. This role involves using biophysical methods to evaluate drug interactions and protein behavior, significantly impacting drug discovery and development. The ideal candidate will work independently to provide strategic biophysical insights into targets and ligands, supporting multi-disciplinary teams and advancing early-stage drug discovery projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Biophysical Characterization:

    • Characterize small molecule-protein interactions using biophysical methods like SPR, HTRF, ITC, MST, Native MS, and thermal stability assays (e.g., DSF).
    • Apply these techniques to assess the kinetics and thermodynamics of protein-ligand interactions, providing critical insights to project teams.
  • Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration:

    • Represent the biophysics group in multi-disciplinary teams, contributing to strategic decision-making based on biophysical data.
    • Collaborate with teams across drug discovery to integrate biophysical findings with other scientific disciplines.
  • Innovation & Mentorship:

    • Stay at the forefront of biophysical technologies, integrating emerging methods to strengthen team capabilities.
    • Mentor and train colleagues in biophysical techniques and drug discovery processes.
  • Research & Publication:

    • Conduct high-impact research that contributes to the scientific understanding of drug interactions.
    • Maintain a strong publication record, showcasing creativity and innovation across multiple scientific areas.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Education: Ph.D. in Biophysics, Biochemistry, Structural Biology, or a closely related field.
  • Experience: 3-5 years in drug discovery, either in a pharmaceutical or academic laboratory.
  • Skills:
    • Expertise in biophysical methods (e.g., SPR, ITC, HTRF, MST, Native MS, DSF).
    • Experience in high-throughput screening and plate-based pharmacology.
    • Hands-on experience handling recombinant proteins for biochemical/biophysical assays.
    • Knowledge in enzymology, drug action mechanisms, and structural biology.
  • Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to share knowledge effectively within teams.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Additional Expertise:
    • Experience in small-molecule screening using biophysical methods.
    • Relevant experience in difficult-to-drug targets, targeted protein degradation, or antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs).

Physical/Mental Requirements:

  • The role involves physical tasks such as lifting large stacks of plates, transporting equipment, and diagnosing/repairing equipment.
  • Candidates must be able to work safely in a laboratory environment, including standing, walking, and using protective equipment (lab coat, gloves, eyewear).

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Salary: $99,900 to $166,500 annually, depending on experience.
  • Bonus: Eligible for a 15% performance-based bonus.
  • Long-term Incentives: Eligible for Pfizer's share-based long-term incentive program.
  • Benefits:
    • Comprehensive health benefits (medical, prescription drug, dental, vision).
    • 401(k) plan with Pfizer Matching Contributions and additional retirement savings.
    • Paid vacation, caregiver/parental leave, and other benefits.

Work Location:

  • On-premise in La Jolla, California.
  • Relocation Assistance available, depending on business needs.

Equal Opportunity:

  • Pfizer is an Equal Opportunity Employer, committed to diversity and inclusion. We comply with all applicable laws regarding nondiscrimination and employment eligibility.

This is an exciting opportunity for a highly skilled and motivated scientist to play a pivotal role in advancing drug discovery within the oncology space using cutting-edge biophysical techniques.
