Job Title: Senior Scientist, Quantitative Systems Pharmacology (QSP)

Location: Global (Boston and Måløv)
Department: Global Drug Discovery (GDD) - Research & Early Development (R&ED), Novo Nordisk

About the Department

Novo Nordisk’s Global Drug Discovery (GDD) within Research & Early Development (R&ED) brings together experts in pharmacokinetics (PK) and pharmacodynamics (PD) to advance therapies using advanced modeling and simulation tools. The department, with teams in Måløv and Boston, specializes in mechanistic modeling (QSP), helping to understand disease mechanisms, optimize dosing regimens, and support drug discovery. We work at the intersection of pharmacology, bioengineering, and mathematical modeling to drive innovation and advance novel therapies with minimal reliance on non-clinical in vivo studies.

The Position

As a Senior Scientist in QSP, you will leverage your expertise in mathematical modeling and simulation to integrate cutting-edge pharmacology, bioengineering, and pre-clinical research to develop innovative therapies. You will play a leadership role in connecting humanized pre-clinical research (Microphysiological Systems or MPS) to biobanks and clinical trial data, bridging translational gaps through modeling of human physiology and drug interactions.

You will be part of a dynamic and growing team that applies Quantitative Systems Pharmacology (QSP) to inform drug discovery and regulatory interactions, minimizing the need for traditional non-clinical studies. This role requires efficient collaboration with other scientific experts across pharmacology, bioengineering, and clinical development teams.

Key Responsibilities

Scientific Leadership and Innovation

  • Identify knowledge gaps and convert relevant biology and experimental setups into mathematical models that can be addressed through modeling and simulation.
  • Lead and drive QSP collaborations with bioengineers, scientists, and clinicians to solve complex translational problems.
  • Anticipate business challenges and recommend improvements to processes, products, or services.
  • Regularly lead project teams and contribute to functional strategies within the Novo Nordisk pipeline.
  • Foster innovation within the department by utilizing advanced QSP models to drive drug discovery and development efforts.

Modeling and Simulation

  • Apply expertise in QSP, system biology, pharmacokinetics, and physiologically-based pharmacokinetics to translate data into actionable insights.
  • Utilize tools such as ODEs, PDEs, ABMs, optimization, and machine learning (ML) to develop state-of-the-art QSP models.
  • Design mathematical models that describe the interactions between drugs and biological systems, enabling the optimization of therapies for metabolic syndrome and liver-related diseases.
  • Integrate in vitro and clinical pharmacology data into QSP models to support drug development.

Collaboration and Mentorship

  • Work within interdisciplinary teams and collaborate with external partners to advance therapeutic development.
  • Mentor colleagues and supervise students, disseminating knowledge and providing guidance on complex modeling challenges.
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues from diverse backgrounds and present your work to senior managers and stakeholders.

Qualifications

Required

  • Ph.D. and 10+ years of post-doctoral experience, or a Master's degree with 16 years of industry experience, or a Bachelor's degree with 22 years of relevant experience in engineering, physics, math, or other fields related to quantitative biology and pharmacology.
  • Expertise in mechanistic modeling, system biology, pharmacokinetics, and physiologically-based pharmacokinetics.
  • Experience with ODEs, PDEs, ABMs, optimization, and machine learning (ML) techniques.
  • Proficiency in programming with modeling/analytical software (e.g., Matlab/SimBiology, Python, Julia, R).
  • Strong understanding of metabolic syndrome and/or liver-related diseases.
  • Excellent ability to translate mathematical models into practical, actionable insights in the context of drug development.

Preferred

  • Experience with Microphysiological Systems (MPS) or similar experimental setups.
  • Strong ability to work independently in complex environments and mentor colleagues.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to present findings to diverse audiences.
