Pharmacist Position - Wrangell, AK

Shift: Days, Full Time

Job Summary: Join our Sigma Healthcare team as a Pharmacist at our client's healthcare facility in Wrangell, AK. This role is vital within the pharmacy department, ensuring safe, effective, and cost-efficient drug therapy. You will prepare and distribute medications in compliance with Federal and State laws, provide patient counseling, and offer guidance to medical, nursing, and village staff on drug therapy. Additionally, you'll maintain an appropriate drug inventory and engage in quality improvement initiatives. Your contributions will have a direct impact on patient care.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Prescription Review: Evaluate all prescriptions for appropriateness, legality, and safety, including contraindications, interactions, allergies, and lab value abnormalities. Consult with prescribers as needed.
  • Documentation: Accurately document all clinical activities and interventions, and enter prescriptions into pharmacy software.
  • Order Verification: Ensure timely and accurate filling of prescription orders, maintaining required records and documentation. Work independently while prioritizing assignments to meet service timelines.
  • Patient Education: Clearly explain medication information to patients, ensuring understanding of drug names, uses, and expected outcomes. Maintain regular communication with patients and healthcare providers to resolve issues and optimize care.
  • Medication Management: Conduct chart reviews for prescription refills and medication therapy management. Provide recommendations to providers and request refills on behalf of patients.
  • Team Leadership: Supervise pharmacy support personnel, including verifying the activities of pharmacy technicians. Serve as a mentor for pharmacy students and technicians.
  • Quality Improvement: Participate in clinical and administrative activities focused on quality control and improvement. Attend meetings and contribute to committees as needed.
  • Medication Control: Ensure the availability, preparation, and management of medications, including selecting appropriate drugs for the formulary. Undertake additional departmental responsibilities as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proficiency in reviewing patient medical histories, labs, and medication orders, leveraging extensive pharmaceutical knowledge.
  • In-depth understanding of state and federal pharmacy laws.
  • Ability to provide age-appropriate care to patients of all demographics.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for effective interaction with patients and staff.
  • Competence in using computer applications and pharmacy software.
  • Strong mathematical skills for accurate dosage calculations and compounding.
  • Collaborative mindset to work effectively within a healthcare team while exercising sound professional judgment.
  • Capacity to manage interruptions and adapt to changing workloads and schedules.
  • Independence in setting priorities, making critical decisions, and responding promptly to urgent requests.

Minimum Education:

  • Pharm.D. degree and a valid license as a registered pharmacist.
  • Candidates licensed before 2003 with a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree may qualify with three years of hospital or ambulatory clinic pharmacy experience.

Required Licenses/Certifications:

  • An unrestricted license as a registered pharmacist in any state.
  • Certification in Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (CPR and AED), which may be obtained within one year of hire.
  • Completion of a nationally recognized pharmacy residency program (ASHP) is preferred.
