Job Title: Pharmacist

Location: Wrangell, AK

Shift: Monday - Friday, 8:30 AM - 5:30 PM (1-hour lunch break from 1 PM - 2 PM)

Job Summary: We are seeking a dedicated Pharmacist to join our team at a healthcare facility in Wrangell, AK. This role is essential in ensuring safe, effective, and cost-efficient medication therapy for our patients. The Pharmacist will prepare and distribute medications in accordance with federal and state laws, provide patient counseling and education, and collaborate with medical, nursing, and village staff on drug therapy. Additionally, the Pharmacist will maintain an appropriate drug inventory and participate in quality improvement initiatives.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Review all prescriptions for appropriateness, legality, completeness, contraindications, interactions, allergies, and lab value abnormalities. Conduct patient chart screenings and provide clinical consultations to resolve any concerns with prescribers.
  • Document all clinical activities and interventions accurately, entering prescriptions into pharmacy software.
  • Verify prescription orders promptly and ensure all records are maintained accurately while working independently with minimal supervision.
  • Advise patients clearly about their medications, including indications, drug names, dosages, and expected changes. Ensure patients understand their treatment and maintain regular communication with healthcare providers.
  • Conduct chart reviews for prescription refills and medication therapy management, writing recommendations for providers and requesting prescription refills as needed.
  • Provide drug information and consultation, and support staff education regarding drug therapy.
  • Supervise pharmacy support personnel, verify their daily activities, and serve as a role model for pharmacy students and technicians.
  • Participate in clinical and administrative activities, including quality control and improvement initiatives. Attend meetings and serve on committees as requested, ensuring the availability and control of medications.
  • Engage in health promotion and disease prevention activities related to drug use and preventive therapy.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proficient in reviewing patient medical histories, lab results, and medication orders, demonstrating a strong understanding of pharmaceutical sciences.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of state and federal pharmacy laws is essential for accurate prescription filling.
  • Ability to provide patient care tailored to individuals of all ages and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Familiarity with computer applications and strong mathematical skills for accurate drug dosage calculations and compounding.
  • Capacity to collaborate effectively within the healthcare team, exercising sound professional judgment and adapting to workload changes.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to prioritize tasks, make critical decisions, and respond swiftly to emergencies.

Minimum Education:

  • Pharm.D. degree with active licensure as a registered pharmacist. Candidates licensed prior to 2003 with a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree will be considered if they have at least 3 years of experience in a hospital or ambulatory clinic pharmacy.

Required Licenses/Certifications:

  • An unrestricted license as a registered pharmacist in any state.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for Healthcare Providers (CPR and AED), to be obtained within one year of hire.
  • Completion of a nationally recognized pharmacy residency program (by ASHP) is preferred.
