The Medical Scribe will provide scribe services in an Emergency Department at the direction of a Physician or Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant). The scribe’s primary responsibility is to document the provider’s dictation and activities in real time within the electronic medical record (EMR).

Responsibilities

  • Assist providers with documentation of each patient’s medical chart during their visit.
  • Transcribe history and physical examinations as given by the patient and provider.
  • Document all procedures performed by the provider or nurses in patient medical charts.
  • Use various EHR tools to compile data for statistical reports ensuring efficiency and accuracy.
  • Transcribe consultations and discussions with family members and/or providers.
  • Transcribe results for labs, x-rays, and other evaluations in patient medical charts.
  • Follow up on the progress of pending results to finalize patient workups for the provider.
  • Document proper diagnoses, follow-up instructions, and prescriptions as dictated by the clinician.

Qualifications

  • Education/Experience:
    • High school diploma/GED required.
    • Bachelor’s degree preferred (or verification that degree is in progress).
    • Biology coursework at the undergraduate level or above preferred; Anatomy and Physiology and Medical Terminology coursework preferred.
    • At least 100 hours of work, volunteer, or shadowing experience in the healthcare field preferred.
    • Experience in a direct patient care environment preferred (e.g., EMT, scribe, clinical technician in a hospital, medical assistant in a doctor’s office).
  • Knowledge & Skills:
    • Basic understanding of medical terminology and general medical knowledge.
    • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
    • Excellent listening and note-taking skills.
    • Detail-oriented with proven ability to work effectively under conditions requiring accuracy.
    • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
    • Ability to remain calm in a fast-paced, sometimes stressful environment.
    • Computer proficiency.
    • Ability to type 50 words per minute or above, adjusted for errors.

Immunization & Testing Requirements

  • Provide documentation of health information, testing, and/or immunizations, including but not limited to: Tuberculosis, Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B, Tdap, and Flu.
