Job Overview:

The Outpatient Pharmacist provides medications and counseling based on prescriptions from healthcare practitioners, ensuring the accuracy, safety, and appropriateness of treatments. They also advise patients on over-the-counter products and assess for potential contraindications. In addition to direct patient care, the pharmacist maintains sound accounting practices, oversees outpatient pharmacy operations, and delivers exceptional customer service. The pharmacist may be required to provide on-call support to the specialty pharmacy and demonstrate professionalism and empathy in all patient, family, and team interactions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Customer Service Excellence: Deliver top-tier service by following the AIDET model, ensuring a respectful and empathetic approach in every patient interaction.
  • Medication Review & Counseling: Evaluate prescribed medications for appropriateness based on clinical and institutional guidelines, as well as individual patient needs.
  • Prescription Verification: Perform final professional reviews of prescriptions, ensuring timely and accurate filling, and checking all processes.
  • Team Leadership & Supervision: Mentor and supervise interns and technicians, promoting high standards, patient-centric care, and adherence to ICARE values.
  • Inventory Management: Oversee product inventory, order management, and ensure compliance with financial and accounting protocols.
  • Interdepartmental Liaison: Collaborate with departments like Hospice, Social Service, Specialty Pharmacy, and other healthcare teams to support patient care initiatives.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure adherence to all regulatory guidelines (State Board of Pharmacy, DEA, CMS, FDA, Joint Commission).
  • Professional Development: Maintain licensure, pursue ongoing learning, and develop specialized knowledge in areas such as oncology, HIV, etc.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education: Graduate of an NABP-accredited pharmacy school.
  • Licensure: Active KY Pharmacy license (if licensed out of state, 4-8 weeks anticipated for obtaining KY license).
  • Experience: Previous pharmacy experience; outpatient pharmacy experience preferred.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Education: PharmD.
  • Certifications: Registered Preceptor, Board Certified in Oncology, PGY2 residency in Oncology, or at least 3 years of experience in a similar outpatient setting.
  • Specialized Knowledge: Knowledge of pharmacy computer systems, third-party payment processing, and healthcare laws. Experience in oncology or HIV is highly desirable.
  • Skills: Strong communication, decision-making, and patient consultation skills. Ability to identify and manage medication safety issues, promote patient-centered care, and ensure quality assurance.
