Summary

Position: Full Remote Coder I

Overview:

This entry-level position, reporting to the Coding Director, involves the accurate assignment of ICD-9-CM (ICD-10-CM) and CPT-4 codes for outpatient medical records. Duties include coding diagnoses and procedures for various outpatient settings such as Outpatient Hospital Clinics, ASU, IV Therapy, Emergency Departments, and more. The role requires abstracting records for accuracy and completeness using tools like 3M Coding Reimbursement, Optum, and Epic Systems. Responsibilities also include evaluating medical necessity and resolving Correct Coding Initiative (CCI) edits. The coded data supports licensure, statistical needs, and reimbursement processes.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):

  • Education: Associate's degree in a science field is strongly preferred, with completion of an accredited program through AHIMA or AAPC.
  • License/Certifications: CCA, CCS, RHIT, RHIA, Certified Professional Coder (CPC), or CPC-A credential is required.
  • Experience: Completion of the MH Coder I apprenticeship program or 1-2 years of outpatient coding experience using 3M Coding and/or Optum Reimbursement encoder and CAC products. Experience with the Epic EMR system is preferred.
  • Proficiencies: Strong knowledge of ICD-9-CM (ICD-10-CM) and CPT-4 coding guidelines and principles is essential.
  • Specialized Knowledge: Ability to apply broad guidelines to specific coding situations with discretion and analytical skills. Good understanding of Anatomy and Physiology, as well as Pharmacology.
