Job Purpose

The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) is a field-based medical professional with in-depth knowledge of specific disease states, therapeutic landscapes, and both Lilly and competitor products. Acting as a trusted resource for scientific experts, the MSL plays a critical role in facilitating scientific exchange and providing medical information to address important clinical and scientific questions. By sharing insights from the field, the MSL helps shape Lilly's research and strategic direction, driving meaningful advancements in healthcare.


Key Responsibilities

1. Scientific Knowledge and Communication

  • Continuously learn to maintain expert-level knowledge of therapeutic areas and product science.
  • Serve as a reliable, unbiased, and up-to-date medical and scientific resource for customers.
  • Establish credibility by answering complex scientific questions and providing accurate, trusted information.

2. Customer Engagement and Support

  • Spend the majority of time engaging with scientific experts, building mutually beneficial relationships.
  • Provide deep disease state and product insights to address customer questions and needs.
  • Connect scientific experts with Lilly resources and explore opportunities for collaborative research.

3. Strategic Vision and Leadership

  • Synthesize complex data to communicate meaningful clinical insights to Lilly's medical and cross-functional teams.
  • Apply creative problem-solving skills to address challenges and execute solutions effectively.
  • Actively contribute to affiliate medical planning and strategy development.

4. Territory Ownership

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate strategic territory plans to optimize efficiency and results.
  • Prioritize core activities and demonstrate accountability for achieving objectives.
  • Ensure compliance with internal and external regulations, policies, and procedures.

Qualifications and Experience

Minimum Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in health sciences (PharmD, MD, or PhD in a medically related field).
  • Experience in providing complex medical/scientific information and engaging with scientific experts or Key Opinion Leaders.

Preferred Experience

  • Medical degree or relevant therapy area expertise.
  • Familiarity with healthcare systems, academic communities, medical research, and education.
  • Prior field-based or MSL experience.

Desired Skills

  • Intellectual curiosity and learning agility for mastering large amounts of scientific content.
  • Ability to travel up to 80%, including weekends, as needed.
  • Strong self-direction with effective management of multiple priorities.
  • Advanced presentation skills and expertise in literature analysis.
  • Strategic thinking and problem-solving to evaluate and communicate impactful insights.
  • Effective written and verbal communication in English.
  • Resilience and adaptability in managing complex challenges.
  • Strong teamwork, networking, and relationship-building skills, with high emotional intelligence.
