Medical Coding Specialist II - Inpatient

Location: UW Health, Northern Illinois
Position Type: Full-Time, Remote Option Available

Position Summary:

The Medical Coding Specialist II - Inpatient is responsible for reviewing and coding documentation in the electronic medical record for inpatient encounters. This role involves assigning and sequencing ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS codes, adhering to the Standards of Ethical Coding set by AHIMA and ICD-10 Official Coding Guidelines. You will work with various Diagnosis Related Groups (DRG) methodologies, including MS-DRGs and APR-DRGs, and handle complex case types such as transplants, major trauma, and mortality records. The position also includes participating in physician query processes and collaborating with the Clinical Documentation Integrity Specialist (CDIS) team. Quality monitoring and education support for coding staff are also part of the role.

Education/Training:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Medical Coding Education or active coding certification required. Graduate of a Health Information Technology program preferred.

Licensure/Certification:

  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) preferred.

Experience/Skills/Abilities:

  • Minimum of two years of progressive inpatient facility coding experience required; experience in an Academic Medical Center or Level 1 Trauma Center preferred.
  • Extensive knowledge of ICD-10-CM/PCS coding systems, MS-DRGs, APR-DRGs, and official coding guidelines.
  • Strong understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, pathophysiology, pharmacology, and ancillary test results.
  • Proficiency with encoder software and coding applications/tools.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent communication skills (interpersonal, verbal, and written).
  • Ability to work independently, manage flexible hours, and handle remote work effectively.
  • Familiarity with external auditing programs (e.g., RAC, OIG) is a plus.

Essential Functions:

  • Review and interpret the electronic medical record for the current admission to identify all diagnoses and procedures.
  • Assign and sequence ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS codes using official guidelines, ensuring accurate DRG assignment.
  • Collaborate with the CDIS team for documentation clarification and physician queries.
  • Analyze code assignment for optimal severity of illness and risk of mortality scores.
  • Confirm and correct Admission-Discharge-Transfer (ADT) information as needed.
  • Suggest and assist with workflow process improvements and participate in coding quality and productivity processes.
  • Stay updated with ICD-10 coding system changes and provide expert advice to colleagues.
