Position Overview

As a Medical Coder at Optum, you will play a pivotal role in accurately coding professional services, diagnoses, procedures, and modifiers based on medical records in compliance with regulatory and client guidelines. This includes adhering to the standards set by ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, CMS, and AMA guidelines.


Primary Responsibilities

  • Apply updates from AMA, AHA, and CMS guidelines effectively.

  • Review medical records to assign or modify CPT codes for surgical procedures, vaccines, and laboratory services.

  • Extract and code screening CPT and HCPCS codes from documentation.

  • Utilize NCCI Edits and LCD/NCD coverage determinations to ensure coding accuracy.

  • Collaborate with team members to enhance productivity and maintain quality benchmarks.

  • Prioritize and organize tasks to meet regulatory and client timelines.

  • Ensure confidentiality and maintain the security of patient records in compliance with HIPAA.

  • Adapt to changes in work locations, shifts, and policies as required by business needs.


Eligibility Criteria

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Life Sciences or Allied Medicine.

  • Certified Medical Coder through AAPC or AHIMA (CPC, CCS, CIC, or COC certifications accepted).

Skills:

  • In-depth knowledge of Medical Terminology, Human Anatomy, and Physiology.

  • Proficient in ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS guidelines.

  • Familiarity with ED/EM levels and appending modifiers based on NCCI edits and CPT guidelines.

  • Strong understanding of security policies and data protection.
