Job Description for Medical Coder

Position: Medical Coder
Reporting To: Coding Manager
Department: Coding
Grade: 13

Profile Description:
As a Medical Coder, you will be responsible for accurately coding charts across specialties, following CMS guidelines.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Code charts per CMS guidelines using CPT, ICD, HCPCS, and Modifiers before submitting to clients.
  • Analyze and interpret patient medical records to identify billable services as per third-party payer requirements.
  • Research and resolve client and stakeholder inquiries on coding accuracy.
  • Stay updated on the latest coding regulations and industry standards through workshops, conferences, and in-house sessions.

Qualifications:

  • Preferred degrees: BPT, BSc Nursing, MSc Nursing, BPharm, MPharm, BOT, Life Sciences.
  • Required certification: CPC/COC/CCS.

Functional Competencies & Role Prerequisites:

  • 0–6 months or more experience in coding in a relevant specialty.
  • Open to working in rotational shifts.
  • Strong knowledge of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, and coding guidelines.
  • Proficiency in NCCI edits, CMS guidelines, and local/national policies.
  • Minimum typing speed of 25–30 words per minute.
