JOB BRIEF

We are seeking an experienced medical coder with expertise in vascular coding to support our doctors and scribes with coding and charting. The ideal candidate must be well-versed in 2022 CPT, HCPCS, and ICD-10 codes, as well as CCI edits, DRG, and correct use of modifiers, with a minimum of 2 years of surgical coding experience. A thorough understanding of human anatomy and medical terminology, coupled with an analytical mind, is essential. The role involves consulting, advising, interpreting, and coding patients' medical records, transcriptions, test results, and other documentation to ensure a smooth billing process.

A pleasant, calm, and professional demeanor is crucial, as front office staff are the first and last point of contact for patients. As a team member, you will provide high-quality patient care, always maintaining a caring, ethical, and professional experience.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Research appropriate coding options for medical procedures involving the lower extremities, both in-office and surgical settings.
  • Attend conferences and symposiums to stay updated on new codes and coding rules.
  • Prepare summaries and assign the appropriate codes for medical procedures.
  • Assist in preparing medical record documentation/charts for doctors, scribes, and other clinicians.
  • Capture and transcribe medical record documentation during patient visits.
  • Assign diagnosis and procedure codes for clinic visits and surgical procedures.
  • Assist team members with inquiries regarding coding, documentation, denials, and billing.
  • Adhere to all clinic, hospital, and surgery center policies, procedures, and protocols, including safety, confidentiality, and HIPAA guidelines.
  • Utilize EHR systems (EPIC and eClinical Works) to ensure information accuracy and completeness.
  • Ensure codes are assigned and sequenced correctly per government and insurance regulations.
  • Review patient charts and documents for verification and accuracy.
  • Clarify any unclear information for other staff members.
  • Participate in projects and meetings as required and complete other tasks assigned by management.
  • Cross-train and assist coworkers as needed.

KNOWLEDGE and EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in medical coding, with at least 2 years in surgical coding.
  • Certification as a CPC is highly desirable but not required.
  • Knowledge of legal, regulatory, and policy compliance issues in medical coding/billing and documentation.
  • High school diploma required; an associate degree is preferred.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and other office software.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience with EHR systems (especially EPIC or eCW).
  • Fluent in English (reading, writing, comprehension, and speaking).
  • Strong knowledge of human anatomy and medical terminology.
  • Understanding of the operations of medical offices and hospitals.
