Role Purpose

Novartis is seeking a Senior Scientist to join its Compound Management team in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The role focuses on managing chemical compounds using automated systems, including liquid handlers, and involves preparing stock solutions, archiving materials, executing sample requests, developing processing protocols, coordinating global sample distribution, and maintaining thorough records.

Key Responsibilities

  • Sample Management:

    • Execute sample plating requests using integrated liquid handlers and large-scale automation platforms (e.g., Tecan, BioMicroLab, SPT Labtech, Agilent, Azenta).
    • Oversee the logistics of powdered and liquid samples, ensuring accurate transfer and storage.
    • Maintain sample containers in designated storage areas, ensuring consistent service levels.
    • Develop and maintain protocols to meet scientific and logistical needs.
  • Automation and Equipment Maintenance:

    • Ensure smooth automation operations through quality control, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting.
    • Manage inventories of reagents and consumables.
  • Collaboration and Efficiency:

    • Work with multidisciplinary teams to implement operational efficiencies regarding throughput, delivery, and costs, while considering health, safety, and environmental factors.
    • Collaborate with scientific staff to meet their needs and ensure proper sample management.
  • Independent Work and Team Collaboration:

    • Effectively multitask and work independently, while also contributing as part of a team.

Qualifications

  • Education:

    • BS or MS in chemistry, biology, bioengineering, or a related life-science/engineering discipline.
  • Experience:

    • Minimum 4+ years of experience in operating and maintaining medium to large-scale automated liquid handling systems.
    • Expertise in platforms like Tecan, BioMicroLab, SPT Labtech, Agilent, Labcyte Echo, and CyBio Felix.
    • Understanding of compound properties (chemical structure, solubility, and responses to external conditions) and hazardous materials.
  • Skills:

    • Strong organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
    • Proficiency in troubleshooting lab robotics and other automation platforms.
    • Interest and capability to learn new automated systems.
    • Experience collaborating with engineers and scientists for automation development is a plus.
  • Desirable Qualifications:

    • Experience designing and deploying automated laboratory workflows.
    • Basic understanding of C# or Visual Basic is advantageous.

Compensation & Benefits

The pay range for this position is expected to be between $92,800 to $139,200/year, with additional benefits and rewards, including sign-on bonuses, restricted stock units, medical coverage, paid time off, and more.
