About the Role:
Optum New Mexico is seeking an IPA Medical Director to join its Albuquerque-based team. This position plays a critical leadership role in guiding clinicians, partnering with operations, and aligning strategic initiatives to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care. This is a clinician-led, value-based environment with a focus on performance, collaboration, and innovation.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Build and maintain relationships with IPA providers to support value-based care adoption

  • Lead initiatives to drive IPA clinical performance in risk, quality, and affordability

  • Apply understanding of quality metrics such as HEDIS, 5 STAR, and disease-based indicators

  • Partner with operations leaders to manage medical programs and patient clinics

  • Maintain a regular in-person presence (minimum 90% of allocated FTE) in all supported clinics

  • Travel across IPA clinics statewide as needed

  • Provide monthly financial and business education to physicians/clinicians

  • Deliver leadership coaching and developmental feedback to providers monthly

  • Collaborate on implementing systems for tracking and improving care quality

  • Represent Optum NM to internal and external stakeholders when required

  • Participate in community and professional events to enhance the organization’s image

  • Provide direct patient care for annual wellness visits (community center/mobile/home visits)


Required Qualifications:

  • MD/DO with an active New Mexico medical license

  • Board Certified or in the process of certification (unless exempted by Credentialing Committee)

  • New Mexico Pharmacy/DEA Registration (if applicable)

  • Current BLS Certification

  • Strong understanding of clinical and business operations within medical groups

  • Proficient in medical financial concepts including revenue cycle and compensation models

  • Comfortable using Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills


Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of clinical experience as a practicing physician

  • Experience with both fee-for-service and managed care delivery systems


Compensation and Benefits:

  • Salary Range: $269,500 – $425,500 (based on full-time employment, variable by experience)
