Position Overview

The Group Leader - Medicinal Chemistry will play a crucial role in leading and managing drug design and synthesis efforts within the medicinal chemistry department. This individual will be responsible for ensuring the successful execution of drug discovery projects, overseeing project teams, optimizing resources, and driving novel approaches to drug discovery across multiple disease areas. As the leader, you will be expected to guide and mentor team members, contribute to strategy formulation, and manage customer relationships through regular project updates and clear communication.


Key Responsibilities

  • Leadership & Project Management:

    • Independently manage and direct drug designing and synthesis efforts, ensuring projects are delivered on time and meet the required scientific standards.
    • Accountable for the success of projects, managing resources effectively, and providing regular updates on scientific issues, opportunities, and developmental plans.
    • Develop and drive the career advancement plans of team members, working with the Reporting Manager to set clear goals and objectives.
    • Ensure adherence to internal policies, processes, and standard operating procedures (SOPs), ensuring all project members comply with safety and environmental health guidelines.
  • Collaboration & Communication:

    • Lead interdepartmental coordination, driving project progress through effective communication with stakeholders.
    • Maintain strong customer relationships, regularly updating clients on project status and collaborating on strategy development.
  • Scientific Leadership:

    • Develop and advance novel molecules, bringing deep scientific expertise to drug discovery efforts.
    • Plan and implement innovative approaches to drug discovery and development, particularly in the context of novel chemical series and disease areas.
    • Lead the design and optimization of structure-activity relationships (SAR) for chemical series in at least two therapeutic areas.
  • Innovation & Strategy:

    • Deploy modern medicinal chemistry techniques, parallel chemistry methods, and advanced analytical tools, working closely with the Reporting Manager to implement best practices and improve project outcomes.

Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry, with 2-3 years of post-doctoral experience in Medicinal/Organic Chemistry.
  • 5-8 years of experience in the drug discovery industry or within a medicinal chemistry department.
  • Proven track record in drug discovery, with a focus on designing and synthesizing novel molecules and driving SAR in various disease areas.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills to effectively manage and mentor team members.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills to interact with cross-functional teams and clients.
  • Deep scientific expertise in medicinal chemistry and drug discovery, with a focus on modern methods and approaches.
  • Ability to independently plan, execute, and drive projects to successful outcomes.
  • Experience with SOPs, EHS guidelines, and ensuring compliance with industry standards.
