The Director of Materials Science at Pfizer will lead a team of scientists to assess and develop the chemical and physical properties of Pfizer’s newest drug candidates. This position offers an opportunity to shape the future of drug product design and development while utilizing cutting-edge technologies to drive innovations from discovery to commercialization.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Technical Leadership:

    • Lead a team of 6-12 scientists to evaluate and develop the properties of drug candidates.
    • Provide expertise in solid-state chemistry, pre-formulation, particle science, and computational chemistry.
    • Continuously enhance the technical skills and scientific knowledge of colleagues.
    • Guide the team in solving complex technical challenges and improving business processes.
  2. Scientific Development:

    • Contribute to the advancement of drug product design using digital/computational solutions.
    • Play an active role in advancing scientific initiatives and fostering external collaborations.
    • Work cross-functionally within Pfizer’s global multidisciplinary teams.
  3. People Leadership:

    • Mentor and coach early and mid-career scientists.
    • Inspire and influence teams to achieve impactful results.
    • Oversee the work of colleagues, ensuring meaningful outcomes that create business impact.
  4. Collaboration & Influence:

    • Work within a matrix environment to achieve project goals and scientific breakthroughs.
    • Influence teams and contribute to the future direction of drug product development at Pfizer.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Education:

    • PhD in Pharmaceutics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related field with 10+ years of relevant experience.
    • Alternatively, a BS/MS with 15+ years of relevant industry experience.
  • Experience:

    • Practical experience in small molecule drug substance/drug product development.
    • Expertise in solid-state chemistry, form control, and particle science.
    • Proven ability to work within cross-disciplinary project teams in a matrix environment.
  • Leadership:

    • Established authority and reputation in the field.
    • Passion for mentoring and developing scientists at various career stages.
    • Ability to lead teams, foster collaboration, and achieve impactful results.
  • Skills:

    • Strong organizational and communication (oral and written) skills.
    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.

Non-Standard Work Schedule/Travel:

  • Occasional travel may be required for in-person meetings, conferences, and project support.

Salary & Benefits:

  • Salary Range: $161,600 to $269,400 annually, with a bonus target of 20% of base salary.
  • Benefits: Includes 401(k) with Pfizer matching contributions, retirement savings, paid leave, health coverage (medical, dental, vision), and more.
