Clinical Screener

Position Overview: Clinical Screeners at Northern Illinois University (NIU) conduct specialized assessments of children in substitute care and their former guardians. These assessments focus on developing DSM-5 diagnostic impressions, estimating violence potential, and evaluating parenting capacity. The resulting reports inform treatment planning and permanency plans for children.

Work Environment: This position offers the flexibility of working from home with regional travel required to conduct assessments.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Trauma-Focused Assessments: Conduct highly specialized assessments to develop diagnostic impressions.
  • Developmental Screenings: Perform early childhood developmental screenings and other evaluations for abused and neglected children.
  • Treatment Recommendations: Assess youth to recommend appropriate treatment levels.
  • Substance Abuse Evaluations: Conduct diagnostic assessments to determine the necessary level of substance abuse intervention.
  • Parenting Capacity Evaluations: Evaluate parenting capacity and recommend necessary interventions.
  • Violence Assessments: Assess interpersonal violence and recommend appropriate interventions.
  • Forensic Reporting: Integrate assessment information into forensic reports, including prognosis for family reunification and service recommendations.
  • Clinical Documentation: Complete and share clinical documentation with relevant parties and supervisors.
  • Leadership in Clinical Meetings: Take a leadership role in various IDCFS clinical meetings, including family meetings, report staffing, priority clinical staffing, and CIPP meetings.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Licensure: Current Illinois LCSW, LCPC, LMFT, or Licensed Clinical Psychologist. LSW and LCP candidates with relevant experience may also be considered.
  • Education: Master’s degree in psychology, social work, counseling, or a related field.
  • Experience: At least three years of relevant clinical experience.
  • Knowledge: Proficiency in DSM-5 diagnostic criteria, empirically supported clinical practices, and understanding of social, emotional, and physical development across the lifespan.
  • Risk Assessment: Ability to determine risk for self-harm or violence.
