Position Overview

The Clinical Research RN coordinates and oversees research protocols conducted at the University of Maryland Medical System. This role requires active participation in complex clinical trials and collaboration with various healthcare team members. As a Clinical Research RN, you will provide leadership, education, and support to ensure compliance and excellence in clinical research practices.


Principal Responsibilities

Research Coordination and Implementation

  1. Coordinate and conduct complex clinical research studies independently or in collaboration with the research team.
  2. Screen and enroll patients in research studies, ensuring all eligibility criteria are met.
  3. Assist physicians and investigators in obtaining informed consent and conducting patient/family education.
  4. Administer investigational drugs and manage patient follow-ups to monitor outcomes and address complications.

Data Management and Reporting

  1. Maintain detailed clinical databases for participants and oversee data entry performed by staff.
  2. Record patient information on flow sheets, case reports, and other forms.
  3. Prepare study reports and serve as the liaison between the institution and study sponsors.
  4. Respond to audits and communicate with clinical study monitors.

Collaboration and Education

  1. Act as a consultant and resource for the healthcare team, including Research Nurse Coordinators.
  2. Provide education to faculty and hospital staff on treatment protocols and procedures.
  3. Represent the department at research and protocol initiation meetings.
  4. Collaborate with the Institutional Review Board (IRB) and other review committees.

Patient Safety and Compliance

  1. Ensure all activities comply with research protocols, IRB guidelines, and patient safety standards.
  2. Prepare for and respond to study audits conducted by sponsors.
  3. Identify and report patient safety risks or adverse events.

Qualifications

Education and Licensure

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) Licensure in the State of Maryland required.
  • Specialized training in a specific area of nursing is necessary.

Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years of direct patient care experience as an RN required.
  • Prior experience in conducting clinical trials is mandatory.

Skills and Abilities

  • Proficiency in computer applications, databases, and personal computer systems is preferred.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge and ability to address age-specific and population-specific patient needs.
