Position Summary

The Clinical Coding Specialist is responsible for final coding of outpatient account types, including emergency department visits, clinic visits, oncology treatments, outpatient therapies, infusion center visits, diagnostic exams, and laboratory reference accounts. This role requires precise data capture, knowledge of coding and regulatory guidelines, and adherence to ethical coding practices.

Education:

  • Associate’s Degree in Health Information Administration - Required

Experience:

  • 1 year of outpatient coding experience - Preferred (for certified applicants)
  • 5-7 years of relevant experience - Required (for non-certified applicants)

License & Certification:

  • Certification by AHIMA (CCA, RHIT, RHIA, CCS) or AAPC (CPC, COC) - Preferred

Core Job Functions:

  • Accurately review medical records and assign diagnosis and procedure codes using computerized encoding software.
  • Resolve national correct coding and outpatient code edits, and apply appropriate modifiers to CPT and HCPCS codes.
  • Abstract necessary information and validate admission and discharge data, reviewing accounts for any aberrant charges.
  • Adhere to AHIMA and AAPC professional standards, ensuring compliance with ICD-10-CM Official Coding Guidelines, Coding Clinic, and CPT procedure codes.
  • Identify and address missing documentation, placing accounts on hold as needed, and monitoring these accounts.
  • Maintain certification and participate in continuing education to stay current on regulations and policies, sharing knowledge with the team.
  • Work independently in a remote, HIPAA-compliant home environment, meeting quality and productivity standards.
  • Resolve technical issues proactively, maintain strong communication with coding management, and escalate obstacles as necessary.
