Core Purpose of the Role:

The Associate Scientist will support the safety assessment vivarium program, managing vivarium operations, providing veterinary medical care, and overseeing animal care staff. The role includes promoting ethical animal care practices and maintaining AAALAC standards within the vivarium.

Role Accountabilities:

  • Monitor the health of laboratory animals and uphold vivarium standards.
  • Ensure practices align with Animal Welfare Regulations and AAALAC guidelines.
  • Collaborate effectively with cross-functional team members in discovery and regulatory environments.
  • Maintain regulatory compliance with CPCSEA and GLP at all times in the facility.
  • Coordinate animal imports and quarantine procedures with stakeholders.
  • Supervise and train laboratory animal care technicians and other team members.
  • Participate in the design and review of research protocols and studies.
  • Ensure necessary resources are available for daily operations.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives in the vivarium.
  • Maintain biosecurity and manage SPF animal populations, including sentinel programs.
  • Assist the Attending Veterinarian (AV) and facility veterinarians with daily operations.
  • Focus on capacity utilization and excellence in vivarium maintenance for increased efficiency.
  • Engage in outreach efforts, publications, and continuing education programs.

Skills and Capabilities:

  • Proficiency in laboratory animal science and management.
  • Experience in health monitoring programs and outbreak management.
  • Knowledge of animal imports and quarantine procedures.
  • Familiarity with regulatory guidelines.

Education:

MVSc
