Job Title: Associate Publications Writer, Global Medical Affairs


Role Summary

The Associate Publications Writer will provide support to Pfizer's Biopharmaceuticals Group (PBG), specifically the CMAO-Global Medical Excellence & Innovation team, Global Medical Affairs. The role involves assisting in the development of scientific content such as abstracts, posters, manuscripts, congress presentations, and slide decks. The position requires strong scientific writing skills and the ability to interpret and summarize complex data in alignment with Pfizer’s publication and general policies.


Key Responsibilities

Scientific Writing and Document Development

  • Support the development of abstracts, posters, manuscripts, congress presentations, and slide decks as per business needs, under the supervision of the Publications Writer.
  • Ensure accurate data representation and quality control for all documents, ensuring data is objective and adheres to general publication policies.
  • Provide regular project updates using specified trackers and presentation formats.
  • Train on developing plain language summaries for manuscripts as needed.

Data Mining and Literature Review

  • Perform requisite data mining and research to support the creation of scientific documents.
  • Support the Medical Affairs group with literature reviews, summaries, and preparation of slide decks.
  • Conduct searches using tools such as OvidSP, PubMed, Medline, Embase, and Biosis to gather relevant data.

Congress and Scientific Support

  • Provide scientific support at congresses, including the development of materials and reports.
  • Contribute to the creation of slides, abstracts, training materials, and style guides for diverse audiences.

Project and Time Management

  • Ensure timely delivery of all required activities within budget, adhering to all requisite guidelines and deadlines.

Required Skill Set

Technical Skills

  • Writing Skills: Strong scientific writing ability, including interpreting and summarizing complex data in a clear, concise, and persuasive manner.
  • Analytical Skills: Experience with bibliographic databases (e.g., PubMed, OvidSP, Medline, Embase, Biosis) and ability to analyze data, form hypotheses, and design analyses to test them.
  • Language Skills: High fluency in written English and strong functional fluency in spoken English.
  • Personal Skills: Strong organizational skills, ability to prioritize multiple projects, meet deadlines, and maintain confidentiality.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Effective influencing and negotiation skills, particularly in guiding decisions regarding document content strategy.
  • Software Proficiency: Proficient in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and reference management tools like EndNote. Experience with literature searches and freely accessible databases is preferred.

Managerial Skills

  • Reports directly to the Publications Lead-GMAIST.
  • Collaborates with Publications Writer, Global Medical Affairs Leads, and Publication coordinators.
  • Interacts with Medical Affairs colleagues at local, regional, and global levels.

Education & Experience

  • Education: Post-graduate/Doctorate degree in life sciences, pharmacy, medical sciences, or equivalent.
  • Experience:
    • 2–3 years of relevant experience for medical graduates/PhDs.
    • More than 3 years of relevant experience for master’s in life sciences.
    • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in publication writing in academic settings, or communications experience within an agency, CRO, pharma/biotech company.
    • Experience with search tools, developing search strings, and assessing search results is preferred.
