Position Title: AI Researcher - Chemistry and Biology Workflow Automation
Location: Not specified
Company: Lilly

Position Overview:

Lilly’s Discovery Chemistry Research and Technologies (DCRT) organization is seeking an AI Researcher to join a multidisciplinary team. This role focuses on developing AI agents capable of autonomously planning, executing, and optimizing complex chemistry and biology workflows, accelerating the drug discovery process. The position offers the opportunity to work at the intersection of AI, chemistry, biology, and automation, collaborating with experts across AI@Lilly and Tech@Lilly to enhance life-changing medicines.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Agentic Framework Development: Design AI platforms enabling autonomous agents to optimize chemistry and biology workflows. Integrate multiple AI agents to improve collaboration and scalability in scientific processes.
  • Workflow Automation: Develop solutions using large language models (LLMs) and generative AI to automate multi-modal data processing, analysis, and interpretation in chemistry and bioinformatics.
  • AI Engineering and Optimization: Train, fine-tune, and deploy transformer-based models tailored to chemistry and biology applications.
  • Research and Collaboration: Conduct independent research and collaborate with chemists, biologists, and computer scientists to integrate AI solutions into existing workflows.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Computer Science, Computational Chemistry, Bioinformatics, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience in developing or integrating chemistry or biology software (e.g., REINVENT, Chemprop).
  • Strong experience with machine learning/data science libraries such as PyTorch, Keras, HuggingFace, Pandas, and Scikit-Learn.
  • Experience in large language model (LLM) engineering, including tokenization, prompt engineering, and chain-of-thought.

Additional Skills/Preferences:

  • Understanding of multi-modal chemistry or biology data.
  • Familiarity with agent-based modeling and agentic frameworks in scientific contexts.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with wet-lab scientists.
  • Experience with training, fine-tuning, and deploying large-scale transformer-based models.
  • Knowledge of reinforcement learning and inference-time compute algorithms.
  • Expertise in large-scale reinforcement learning systems and model quantization.
  • Familiarity with cloud computing platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure).

Compensation:

  • Anticipated salary range: $142,500 - $228,800, based on qualifications and experience.

Lilly offers a comprehensive benefits program, including 401(k), pension, medical, dental, and vision benefits, life insurance, vacation benefits, and employee wellness programs.
